Frequently

Asked

Questions.

What is fit testing?

Fit testing detects if air leaks into the respirator through gaps in the seal between the respirator face-piece and face. People's faces vary significantly in size and shape so it is important that a tight-fitting respirator is a suitable fit for each worker to meet RPE compliance standards.

How do you fit test?

  • Qualitative fit testing - is a pass/fail test that relies on the wearer's ability to taste or smell a test agent. This type of test can be used on half-face respirators.

  • Quantitative fit testing – uses specialised equipment (Accufit) to measure how much air leaks into the respirator. This type of test can be used on half-face and full-face respirators.

What is required for a successful fit test?

  • Employee must be clean shaven

  • No smoking or eating is allowed 30 minutes before test.

  • Follow all instructions of Maskers testing team

How long will one test take?

RPE fit tests take around 5-10 minutes to complete. However, please allow 10 minutes per person as retests of multiple mask types may be required to find the correct fit.

Can I fail a test?

Yes. A retest must be done if the employee has the wrong size mask on when testing.

In a qualitative test, this means the employee can taste or smell the test solution at any point throughout the test.

In a quantitative test, this means the AccuFit Machine has picked up unfiltered particles either in/outside the past

What must I provide as an employer?

All workplaces that use RPE should implement a respiratory protection program according to AS/ANZ2009:1715 Standard.

A good respiratory protection program will include:

  • correctly selecting appropriate RPE

  • training in the correct use and maintenance of RPE

  • ensuring RPE is correctly used

  • fit testing and fit checking

  • inspection, maintenance and repair of RPE

  • correct storage

  • keep records.

How often should I get my employee’s fit tested?

Fit-testing should be carried out:

  • before the respirator is selected or used for the first time

  • at least once per year to ensure it continues to fit adequately

  • whenever there is a change in the wearer's facial characteristics or features that may affect the facial seal e.g. large weight loss or gain.

What will I get when I test with Maskers?

  • Testing using broad range of brands/types of mask your staff use.

  • Formal Report of Test results including size recommendations so that you can order the correct sizes for your employees.

  • Digital Fit Test Certificate for each employee
